A Little Soul Searching for Local Athlete

Temple Grad Ready to Enter the Arena of
Professional Football
September 25th, 2006

Its easy to get lost among the many hopefuls who came to tryout for Philadelphia’s Arena Football Team, the Soul. Temple University’s Geasey field hosted too many to do a head count and you could only be identified by the color and number of the
T-shirt given to you. Some never had a football background to begin with and some, including Delonne Wilbourn, were trying to continue their careers.

Wilbourn graduated from Temple University in May with a degree in Electrical Engineering. The Harrisburg native also completed his athletic career at Temple, where he played defensive back for the Football team since 2001.

Currently playing for the Central Penn Piranha of the North American Football League (NAFL), Wilbourn says he had to come out and show what he’s got.

“I think while I still got the athletic ability, while I’m still young, I might as well keep going.” Wilbourn said as he walked off the turf field. “Ten-fifteen years from now, I don’t wanna be in the position to say ‘I could’ve did this, I should’ve done that,’ and never tried.”

Wilbourn battled the rainy conditions like everyone else and tried to impress. The coaches clocked his 40-yard dash at 4.7 seconds and his pro agility shuttle was timed in at 4.8 seconds. While his times weren’t at the top, his work in individual position drills is where he impressed. Wilbourn also grabbed two interceptions and was aggressive and enthusiastic all morning. He left with contact information for the Soul and an Arena-2 team.

In addition to his athletic ability, the multi-talented Wilbourn also is an artist, a personal trainer, and writes and produces his own music.
